The Goalie Guild breaks down Budaj
Your Montreal Canadiens' new backup goaltender has his fair share of detractors in Denver and around the league, mostly influenced by his unsightly stats in Colorado and his failure to become an NHL starter. Luckily he won't have the pressure of being a starter in Montreal, so he can focus on the little things.
It seems like there's at least one believer in Peter Budaj in Colorado, and he just so happens to be goalie expert Justin from The Goalie Guild. Read his short article and listen to his description of Budaj's skills, drawbacks and the reasons his limitations have shown more often than not thus far in his career; here.

Somewhere in the depths of my hard drives lies the scoring chances data for a portion of the Avalanche’s 2009-2010 season. Once I’ve straightened upo my Hab’s stuff, I’ll run some numbers on Budaj.
Anyhow, reading the Contrarian Goaltender has sold me on EV Save% relative to other goaltenders on the same team and Budaj looks perfectly fine, whereas Auld didn’t look that good.
Even EV SV% has it’s limitations as well, but it is a better indicator than SV% alone.
One day somebody will figure out how to quantify difficulty. Even if Auld had the exact same ES SV% as Price last season, it would have been accomplished against Toronto, Florida, Rangers etc. All spot starts against offensively challenged teams. It wouldn’t indicate their ability as equals.
It is also an extremely small sample size when taking in Auld’s numbers.
