Hart rocks it and Darche, Gionta, Price make the Monday Habs links
I'll say this, the Lauren Hart/Kate Smith combo of "God Bless America" has always impressed me, but tonight's rendition, now that OSB has been left for chum, was incredible.
Ms. Hart had a very busy day of pre-game interviews and the emotional day certainly showed. Had the Montreal Canadiens met the Philadelphia Flyers in the playoffs, we had an interview set to go. We'll catch up with her next season.
In the meantime, here's the latest Habs news
Mathieu Darche is hoping to stay in Montreal, via The Montreal Gazette
Dennis Kane on the pre-NHLPA days
Fred Poulin with the worst bang-for-the buck forwards this season. No. 1 is no surprise
Habs captain Brian Gionta has joined Twitter
Eric Engles looks at the work needed up front
Earlier today. Mike Cammalleri tweeted the new BioSteel promo for teammate Carey Price. All Habs takes a look at the Canadiens goaltender's season.
According to Ted Bird, when it comes to the Habs, it's all about da money!
The Checking Line with who they think should stay, and who should go.
44 years ago today.....The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup. Happy Birthday.

That’s kind of amazingly awesome that you can see what NHL players are doing for workouts.

One thing that gets me is how much people don’t see that that upper management’s (i.e. those above GM) focus on the bottom line and generating revenue has done a lot of good things for the organization. These guys seem enlightened enough to reinvest profits in things that help the organization, like the top-notch training facility and the strong commitment to maintaining a good minor league affiliate to train new talent and most importantly the ability to spend to the cap or higher. These kind of advantages that money can buy are part of the difference from the current Habs and the sad-sack late 90’s organization that essentially couldn’t afford to compete.
It’s a lot more fun being a fan of the 3rd richest organization than one in the bottom half.
Oh and like I’ve said before, people who want to get rid of Kostitsyn don’t understand what a 5-6 forward is in the modern NHL, because that’s what he is and that’s his role. Just because it looks like a guy can contribute more isn’t a reason to get rid of a guy that is contributing. But some people seem to think that all top 6 forwards need to hit 50 points, just like you need to score 70 to be worthy of playing first line and you can’t compete without a point per game center.
The other problem is that people would be happy with a player who contributed as much as Kostitsyn, or even less, so long as he looked like he was working hard every night. The appearance of work ethic is painted more favorably than actual performance, and I use the phrase “appearance of work ethic” advisedly.
Appearance of work ethic = Darcy Tucker
His reputation among Toronto fans always > than his actual performance.
He’s hardly alone. Montreal loves nothing more than a good, hard-working grinder, especially a francophone, who always moves his feet and finishes his checks.
It doesn’t particularly matter if his forecheck always ends up getting there long before the puck is gone, or that the guys spend most of their time in their own zone, throwing themselves this way and that hoping to block shocks. Very brave, very hard-working, but not very effective.
Sounds like Steve Begin, man was I glad when he was traded.

On another note, you’re right: the Habs’ financial success allows the Habs to spend to the cap player-wise AND spend a lot on coaching and other non-cap hockey expenses. I don’t see why people must insist that “trying to earn money” and “trying to win” are mutually exclusive goals or why an organization must do one at the expense of another. If the Habs are going to spend to the cap anyway, why wouldn’t they do their darndest to win? Besides, winning means more playoff revenue!
It would be nice if Darche stayed up there.
He was on the Worcester Sharks inaugural team back in 2006, was glad to see him make the pros.
