Friday Night Links as we prepare for Habs-Bruins Game Two
So right off the bat, the Boston Bruins David Krejci, who was flustered by the Montreal Canadiens Tomas Plekanec in Game One, tried his best Joe Namath impression by practically guaranteeing a win in Game Two. Just one game David? Not bold enough say the Bruins will win the series though, is he?
The Canadiens did take the day off today, but some players and coach Jacques Martin were made available to the media.
The Bruins, in the meantime, held a brief but intense practice.

Is that Rocket Richard in that last video?

If you’re referring to the 1955 Hal Laycoe incident, it was actually the Bruins defenseman that chopped Rocket over the head, taking out a chunk of his scalp. What Richard did to earn his suspension was punch an official after being held from behind, while Laycoe punched him in the face. Richard then grabbed three successive hockey sticks, striking ther chickenshit Laycoe in the back and he tried getting away.
Hitting an official on two separate occasions is not really a hockey play, but enough talking about shit that happened 55 years ago.

More so than physically attacking officials…and than revising history to celebrate that player. Yes.

" but enough talking about shit that happened 55 years ago."

Awesome. He tries to be a smart ass and indict Richard, but only brings to attention the Bruin who actually tomahawk chopped a player like the video. Then changes the focus to hitting the referee.
Most reports have Richard tomahawking in retaliation as well.

Actually what he did that earned him the suspension was after the play was over he went at Laycoe and smacked him across the head and shoulders with his own stick after Laycoe had dropped his gloves anticipating a fight (the play continued because there was a delayed penalty to be called on Laycoe for the origianl stick swing). The refs tried to contain him but he went back at Laycoe and ended up breaking a stick across his body (so obviously at least one more stick swing by Richard). Richard was then corraled by a linesman (Cliff Thompson) who he then proceeded to knock out cold. Yes he knocked out a linesman.
Dont sugarcoat it just because hes an ex Canadien player. And some of this information comes straight from the CBC. Dont play the all saints game when you know you have had guys on the Canadiens that are just as goon oriented as the Bruins have had. Basically what you are saying is that Richard was justified in what he did which is wrong and you know it.
The CBC had nothing to do with it, all at. The game wasn’t televised, there is no film of the incidents, and little photo evidence. There were several testimonies from witnesses and the league considered only those of the game officials, which contradicted much of what was otherwise reported. In fact, the three working the game initially all had different versions of what took place.
I don’t believe that Laycoe was positioning himself to fight the Rocket. Laycoe barely ever fought, and furthermore, he wore glasses. I doubt he was set to challenge one of the best fighters in the game. There were also some reports saying his glasses had been knocked off and that the first player at Laycoe was not Richard.
It has never been established that Laycoe was called for high-sticking on the play. There has always been debate on that point. After the fact, he was assessed a five minute major and a game. There have also been uncomfirmed reports that Laycoe swung a stick himself at some point, but other reports have contradicited that as well.
I don’t get where you think I’m sugarcoating. The Rocket was in no way justified in his actions and was absolutely in the wrong in every single step of the incident. He had his reasons for acting as he did, that’s about all I can say based on all I’ve read. I should also point out that I’ve never seen the Rocket movie, and the version of events represented in it. I have issues with how Habs history has been represented over time, and I will not subscribe to a one-sided viewpoint of an incident I did not see with my own eyes.
Thompson got up after being knocked into the boards, and managed to finally restrain Richard.
Whether Laycoe intentionally swung his stick to hit Richard is also in question, as both players were racing for a possible icing. Laycoe later said that Richard’s stick hit him first, but later testimony refutes that.
It was only after the delayed penalty that Richard noticed the blood on his head, and his temper got the best of him.
One other thing I question is if Richard was actually held by an official as Laycoe hit him. I read Dick Irvin’s comments in the days after, and he never mentions that part of it, and .

Welll....
On a different note, not sugarcoating current history…Habs win game 2 with great defence and nice offence from unheralded players. Weber, playing for an injured AK, and playing the wing…a goal and 3 hits. Nice contribution.
And Darche….my Bill Masterton candidate.
Love the banter about history….but can we celebrate in Krejci’s face now!! Do a lil dance, make a lil love…get down tonight.??
