The Hit In Pacioretty's Words
"I am upset and disgusted that the league didn't think enough of (the hit) to suspend him. I'm not mad for myself, I'm mad because if other players see a hit like that and think it's okay, they won't be suspended, then other players will get hurt like I got hurt."
"It's been an emotional day. I saw the video for the first time this morning. You see the hit, I've got a fractured vertebrae, I'm in hospital and I thought the league would do something, a little something. I'm not talking a big number, I don't know, one game, two games, three games...whatever, but something to show that it's not right.""I heard (Chara) said he didn't mean to do it. I felt he did mean to do it. I would feel better if he said he made a mistake and that he was sorry for doing that, I could forgive that, but I guess he's talking about how I jumped up or something."
"I believe he was trying to guide my head into the turnbuckle. We all know where the turnbuckle is. It wasn't a head shot like a lot of head shots we see but I do feel he targeted my head into the turnbuckle."
The evidence at hand seems to show Max Pacioretty's version of events to be true. At no point in the video, by any angle does it show him jumping as Zdeno Chara suggested. I for one think it's excellent that Pacioretty isn't going to tow the party line and pretend this was a clean hockey play. The saddest thing is it's more likely Pacioretty will be fined for his comments than the NHL will address the issue.
More from the McKenzie article after the jump.
Pacioretty said he doesn't remember anything about the incident in the second period of Tuesday's game. His only recollection of it was being loaded onto the stretcher on the ice and wondering what had happened. He said Wednesday was an emotional day for him as it started with him looking closely at the video replay of him slamming into the glass partition between the benches. After that he had an emotional meeting with his Dad Ray and his Mom Anna, who attended Tuesday's game but didn't get a good look at the incident until Wednesday morning. Pacioretty said his dad broke down when they saw each other. Pacioretty said he wanted to speak out because he feels it something that had to be said.
Pacioretty and Chara have had a running on-ice battle since a game in early January when Pacioretty shoved Chara after a game-winning goal in overtime, but Pacioretty does not believe Tuesday's hit had anything to do with that and those bad feelings had in his mind blown over. But that doesn't mean he's happy with Chara either.
Pacioretty said doctors have not told him when or if he'll be able to play hockey again, but he's encouraged that symptoms from the concussion have not been very severe so far. He said his neck, with the fractured vertebrae, is quite sore but the treatment of that is on hold until they clear up some other medical issues that require him to be on blood thinners. Pacioretty says he's been greatly encouraged by the support he's receiving from Montreal Canadien fans and has enjoyed interacting with some of them in the hospital.
His comments are likely to continue to reverberate throughout the NHL but Pacioretty says he's fine with that, that he simply wanted his feelings known.
"I am feeling a lot better," Pacioretty added. "My head feels clear, which is good. I haven't got a headache or been nauseous from the concussion. I am much better today than last night. I was starting to look at my life and I wondered if this was really something I wanted to be doing (playing hockey), but there's no question today, once I started to feel better, I was crazy to even think that because I obviously want to play.
"I don't know all the medical terms but they're working on stuff with my artery and they won't release me for awhile. They're thinning my blood and they want to make sure there's no bleeding from the brain and they have to watch for blood clots. I think next week they'll deal with the neck (fractured vertebrae). It's sore right now.
"It means a lot to me to have my parents here with me. My two sisters (one at University of Michigan and one in Connecticut) are going to try to get up too. I am getting a huge lift from the fans in Montreal. I met one guy who gave me a card telling me I'll be OK. That gives me such a big lift. The people in Montreal have been fantastic."

So true, and that’s the most pathetic part of all this. I really hope Chara steps up and apologizes. I’ve never thought of him as a goon before, but his weak words last night and silence today is pretty sad. C’mon Z, don’t pull a Pronger!
Very disappointing how hollow Chara’s efforts have been to make up for it.

Be honest.
What do you want him to do at this very moment?
Go to the hospital? Call him? Pac isn’t likely to take either right now I’d imagine.
Any vocal apology you will call insincere, so I’m honestly curious.
Chara is a f***ing scumbag, period! I wonder how hard you would be defending habs player if the incident was reversed?
I asked a question, what do you want him to do, personally, right now?
F’ing scumbag isn’t an answer.
Questions? The question is, do you think if it were COLON’s son in the hospital that the same ruling would come down from the NHL?? Like f*** it would!! What did COLON do when his son used an elbow pad as a weapon to repeatly hit Pyatt in the face??? Answer that! Bruins play goon hockey to intimidate teams. When it comes down to playing hockey they f***ing suck!
The b’s record would state otherwise.
At any rate: Chill. We get that you’re pissed, that’s totally understandable, but be level headed.
Maybe show some real remorse, because his explanation was complete fabricated bull. I doubt his intention was to main Pacioretty, but he wanted to cream him, get even. He knew exactly what he was doing and i really couldn’t give a fuck whether Bruins fans see it that way or not.
I’d like to see an apology, or at least an expression of regret. Instead we have Chara blaming Pacioretty for the event, and then shrugging off Pacioretty’s comment’s as emotional, basically saying he’s full of shit.

You can apologize without admitting guilt.
If you hit an icy patch on a road and hit a pedestrian, would you apologize even though it wasn’t your fault?
If you think Chara didn’t mean it, you can still feel badly for the result. That is when you apologize.
But, much like Lucic’s ignorance at the end of the game trying to “send a message,” there is no accountability in the locker room and no accountability with Chara and no accountability with the league.
Unfortunately the league wanted to protect one of it’s stars and has caused him and the NHL a PR nightmare.

Its pretty simple- make a public statement saying that it was an ugly play, you’re not proud of the result, and you didn’t want to harm another player.
That’d be enough for me. Instead, Chara’s claiming Max ‘jumped’, which he obviously didn’t, and isn’t showing much remorse at all. That’s pretty f’d up, considering he just about killed a guy.

Well Pacioretty has a good defense to a fine. He was likely on meds, when he said that, after getting his bell rung off the turnbuckle!
What’s worse is that Murphy didn’t even talk to Pacioretty. League policy apparently doesn’t get the victim’s side, feeling emotion gets involved.
That’s like the police not getting a statement from a shooting or stabbing victim.

I’m a Flyers fan and I was stunned that golden boy Chara didn’t get any suspension for this. I mean… anyone who has ever followed hockey or played hockey for any amount of time will tell you they know the glass and doors near the benches are great places to hang players up. Normally you just try to get the other players shoulder, stick, or arms caught up for a second… I’ve never seen anyone do what Chara tried to do. To say it was unintentional just goes against logic – he stares the pole down the whole way, and puts Max’s head right into it. I don’t know the argument against what the videos and pictures clearly show.
If Chris Pronger did that, he’d be gone for at least 10 games.

Glad to see Pacioretty speak his mind
I’m actually hoping they do fine him for speaking out, as it would bring even more ridicule onto them. The NHL deserves all the bullshit that can be thrown at them now.
At the Habs official site, fans could send get well notes to Max. I sent one that urged him to speak his mind. What I suggested isn’t far off from he said.
I sent him a note as well, just telling him to take his time and that we were all pulling for him.

I was also glad to see Air Canada step up and threaten to pull their sponsorship over this. Some cynical people (*cough*Jeff Marek*cough*) are convinced it’s pandering. And they’re probably right about that. But you know what? Who gives a shit? Money talks, and if Air Canada’s PR stunt can affect even a little bit of change, then I don’t care what their motivation is. Everyone knows the NHL’s policies and rules on headshots and dangerous hits is bullshit. If the NHL won’t listen to all the fan voices who want this crap taken out of the game, then maybe they’ll listen to the millions of sponsorship dollars disappearing from their pockets.
Jeff Marek can be fun to talk to, but when it comes to issues like this hit he falls on the wrong side 100% of the time. He’s a Don Cherry worshiper.
I think it’s a tad ridiculous to accuse Air Canada of just pandering. i don’t think you risk harming a relationship with a long time business partner to pander to the public. I think they’re serious.

Good for Max!
I hope he recovers fully. I was hoping to watch him play with the rest of the Canadiens against my Blues tonight in St. Louis.

Max Pacioretty
Chara looking up and straight ahead, well aware of his surroundings. push the guy into the turnbuckle , he knew what he was doing , he intended to ram him in it but , i dont think he wanted him to end his career with that hit, but did intended to ram him in turnbuckle, TSN guy’s say that’s the nature of the sport to play hard and it was a hockey play , that’s way I say the league is a joke cause they dont care about there players , u can’t get away with dirty plays in other sports , thats way this league is a joke and has no Honor, most people wont agree and i dont care , how can u fight in a league sport and not call it an idiot sport, ita a gang league sport that has no control over it self
I wonder..
Do you think anyone told Pacioretty that Bob McKenzie was one of the first to say that Chara’s hit had nothing to do with his injury, rather it was the turnbuckle?

I’m not sure, but Bob McKenzie has deleted his initial article where he said that.

The article I read immediately after the incident McKenzie called for 2 games and said he didn’t see intent and didn’t think it would be severe.
I didn’t see anything about the hit not causing injury.

Thing is with a guy like McKenzie is he’s paid for instant analysis, and really sometimes you need to collect your thoughts on these matters. Your opinion can evolve with more evidence. Simple as that.
I thought it actually wasn’t even interference at first, didn’t notice the puck had squirted away as early as it did. You look at different things with each angle.

The Future
Max, I wish you quickest recovery possible. Just some random thoughts..
1. Two weeks from today, these teams play again in Boston. Will Bettman and Campbell be in attendance?
2. Will someone fight Chara the moment he gets on the ice?
3. Lucic was chasing Pouilot at the tail end of the game. Will that carry over?
4. If Chara gets injured, what will the habs player’s suspension be.
I truly love hockey. I’ve been a loyal Habs fan that lives in Massachusetts for over 35 years. Nothing has disgusted me more about the sport than the actions of not only Chara but the league review board. How the NHL can have a league disciplinarian who has a son playing in the league is unfathomable. I understand he reclused himself from the review but in my opinion, he should never have to because that would show that he is fair and impartial to ALL teams. It just does not make sense.
My hope is that Max can resume his career. The rivalry between these two teams just added a really ugly chapter. Lets hope that the next couple chapters involve some great games hopefully with Max blasting another game winner.
I can’t find anything that says Donald and Eric are related.

Whoa.....my bad!
I cannot either. Funny thing is that I had heard that they were father and son on a number of instances and always assumed it to be true. I just did a quick search…..and nothing comes up.
Thanks for the correction…..before I made a complete idiot of myself!
Eric Fehr is from Winkler, Manitoba. Not a lot of baseball there. :)
His name is also pronounced more like “fair” while Don Fehr’s name is pronounced more like “fear”.

1. I think they’ll have to be
2. If they don’t, they should be ashamed…words couldn’t describe the disappointment of nobody really going after Matt Cooke following the Savard hit and I’m sure the Habs fan base would be equally as pissed if nobody went after Chara.
3. Hopefully no but Lucic hasn’t matured enough not to keep going
4. There’d almost have to be one because there’s nobody big or strong enough to do it even remotely legally. Hal Gill’s been a joke since he was in Boston, and that’s about the only one that could do anything legit.
Something tells me that Max would rather have his team go in and beat them on the scoreboard than make a mockery of the game.
