A "Prospectus" on the Upcoming NHL Season.
Whether you're in a pool, or just like a good analysis of what to expect in the upcoming NHL season, "Hockey Prospectus 2011-12" might be worth picking up
This handy 489 page guide, with info and projections on all 30 teams, 1000 players and a top-100 prospect list, is from the creators of Baseball Prospectus.
The guide introduces and makes projections based on Vukota and GVT stats. I'm not one for relying on the stats to predict who finishes as there are so many other variables to take in, but it does go to show how fortunate last season's Stanley Cup winners really were.
For those into advanced statistics, such as quality starts, Corsi and advanced face-off stats, this would be the guide for you with plenty or articles and tables to dig into.
The paperback guide retails for $19.95 (USD) and can be purchased through Amazon via the link below.
The guide can also be purchased in PDF form from their website for just under $10

I’ve been convinced to go have a look by Neil over at Russian Machine Never Breaks. I’d been hesitant to buy the book because even though I’m clearly smack dab in the target audience, I’m worried about overreliance on GVT in areas where it’s not suited — GVT is a metric that’s good for what it does but specifically ignores context and the incidence of luck vs. skill, making it iffy as a measure of overall player ability IMO. But it seems clear that there’s a lot more than that, enough for me to sink my teeth into!
GVT
Yeah when I looked at the playoff predictions, you can clearly see that it’s a numerical analysis with no other factors. The guide also acknowledges that in some points ie: Suggesting that luck will be needed for the Habs to succeed and that a single element would needed to repeat for a Bruins repeat. I think we all know what/who that was.

We make no bones about the fact that “VUKOTA” is a player projection system that doesn’t use inputs regarding team context or injury context (other than how many games a player played). I think it actually makes your analysis of a player as a reader or my analysis as an analyst that much clearer. We’ve got VUKOTA to tell us what the player would be expected to do “in a bubble” and you or I can tweak that prediction up or down by our own assessment of those factors. If they’d be built into VUKOTA already, we wouldn’t know how much to weight was on the player himself and how much was given to the context.
Kevin – Thanks for the review and the nice words.
