Jarred Tinordi Follows Louis Leblanc's Footsteps, Jumps From NCAA to Canadian Junior
Three different websites (98.5, QMI, Steven Hindle are reporting that Habs first round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, Jarred Tinordi, has agreed to join the OHL's London Knights. Official confirmation is still pending.
Tinordi, who was scheduled to play for the University of Notre Dame next season, was captain of the U.S. under 18 club last season. He did not make the cut for the junior U-20 club for this years upcoming WJC in Buffalo, New York. It is likely that his targets were reset based on that disappointment.
If reports prove true, Tinordi will be jumping into the great junior program of the London Knights, no strangers to helping develop character NHL players over the last decade. The decision mirrors that of Habs 2009 first round pick Louis Leblanc, who last week passed on a second season with the Harvard Crimson in an effort to get more game played under his belt with the Montreal Juniors of the QMJHL.
The decisions of both players should go a long way in accentuating their prospective NHL careers.

That's something that surprises me about university hockey programs.
He should do very well, but seeing guys quit college seems so weird to me when it’s not football or basketball. Hopefully he’ll get a better development program out of it. Have university hockey programs have lost the desire to try developing talent for the NHL or is there some new stigma attached to university clubs?

Notre Dame suspended a couple of players for underage drinking last year. They’ve scared some players away by being so strict. Needless to say, I doubt the Hunters care too much about what the players do after games, so long as it doesn’t affect their practices and game performance.
Also, a big concern is the schedule in the NCAA, and the fact that you can’t attend NHL training camps under NCAA rules, but can in major junior. Leblanc and Tinordi are no able to play NHL exhibition games, they weren’t able to before.

So the major juniors are set up in a manner similar to baseball minor leagues?
If the universities want to remain relevant to developing good players they may need to relax their rules on training camps. It would help them keep their competitive edge and provide another route to the pros. The only problem might be that the players will be 21 or 22 when they graduate, and that could cost them time developing via the AHL and the like.
Still, most universities aren’t run by businessmen…
