Jaroslav Halak traded to St. Louis
Can't believe this happened so quick. More details to come (like who is coming back in return), probably from Robert as well. Figured we should get this up here right away.

Dreger seems to think that it is Lars Eller and Ian Schutz. So does capgeek.
Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs could kill my optimism
Tyler Ennis: Freed from Portland!
WHAT?!?!
Unless we sign Price CHEAP giving us some room to play with and sign some scoring up front. Trade a keeper for more scoring and I can accept it.
I am absolutely sick wondering if that is the plan, if it was the best Gautier thought we could have gotten, I think he is absolutely crazy! I don’t think that trading either was a bad idea…but we should have gotten SOMETHING! These players seem like reaches. Eller is projected as a second line center, while Schultz looks like a bruiser that probably won’t pan out.
Maybe another trade or a big free agent (who I have no idea) will make me feel better, cuz right now I am terribly disappointed.
It is Eller and Shultz. Two big, young forwards. Eller is a fantastic prospect.
Remember, when Halak was offered up to Philly the Habs were just hoping for a 2nd rounder in November. Now they got a first rounder (Eller) and another decent young prospect. They did sell high.

This is a shame. The writing must have been on the wall that he was going to be out of range, so at least Gauthier got something. I do not think that Halak is going to fade away after getting a big contract, but this is probably the better move. Price should be able to do the job.
Nevertheless, I’m very sad to see Jaro go. Thanks Jaro, and good luck.
Indeed. In a perfect world, Halak stays on board. But this is the cap world, and there’s no reason to hold onto two young goalies like they’re diamonds.

What?
This seems all wrong. I thought Halak was the future. Who are these schmo’s?

I was pro-trading Halak. Didn’t know what Gauthier would do, though.

You guys will love Lars Eller.
Great young prospect. Were all sad to see him go.Good luck to us both next year
"HOLY JUMPIN!"
I don’t like this move for the Habs. Nothing against Eller and Schultz, but not a fan of this move.

Can you say SICKENING?
We all had our thoughts shared about Gainey….. and his pro-Price antics…. but WTF????
I seriously think nothing of Eller or Schultz… and now basically have no faith in Gauthier.
Its a Sad Sad day.
And what? We think Sanford will ‘tutor’ Price into a sensible young goalie who doesn’t quake every couple of games??? This is BULL(&&(^.
Turco or some ridiculous other hasbeen coming here would do nothing either. Man this is stupid.

This does stink of favoritism at the expense of the franchise…but if Price signs cheap allowing us to sign scoring maybe it pans out.
If we bring in a “starting” keeper rather than promoting a backup for Price from within, this will set us back a few years due to cap restraints.

I was really shocked when i heard of this trade. I thought for sure Halak would be your guy and Price would be gone. I definitely don’t trust Price with the starting role.

And people were complaining about the draft fiasco of Giroux and Fischer??? Cripes sakes this makes that look half intelligent.

Halak is a UFA in 2 seasons. So to lock him up they would have needed to buy 2-3 years of his UFA status. After his playoff, that WASN’T going to be cheap.
Price is not UFA for another 4 seasons, so they can control his costs for the time being.
Stop reacting with your hearts and look at the cap ramifications. That is why it was always unlikely that they would trade Carey this off-season.
Ovechkin and Crosby feel a whole lot better now than when they woke up this a.m. From the outside this looks like a BAD move. Let’s see if it’s step one in a plan or just getting something for Halak when they weren’t planning/unable to resign him. BTW, I loved your team and its run this year….perfect example of why NHL playoffs are the best.
As a fan, I’m not happy about this at all.
But, we got two, young prospects, who we might be able to use in the near future, or use to move higher in the draft round.
Of course, the first reaction is who are these guys? But who was Halak just a year ago?
If nothing else, at least Gauthier got something, which is a lot more than we got for so many of our impending free agents the last couple of years.
I’m sort of pleased that the org showed some cold-heartedness here.
Halak was the popular guy, but Price is going to be as good, will be cheaper, and will have more years with the Habs holding his right. Halak’s value was as high as it ever was going to be.
From a pure heartless hockey standpoint, selling high on Halak was the right thing to do.
Selling high on Halak definitely makes sense. I’m just surprised that this return is considered ‘high.’ This was the best they could do?
True, it seems like you guys could have gotten at least one NHL regular. But you did get some much-needed size.

Goalies never have very good trade value. Too many decent-enough goalies, not enough jobs. I was, frankly, worried they might get a second-round-pick type of return for either goalie. There were a number of pipe dreams flying around though.
That said, Eller certainly seems to be highly regarded. Hockey’s Future thinks he instantly becomes the Habs’ top C prospect, ahead of Leblanc. We don’t really see the West’s AHL prospects much, so most Habs fans don’t have a good handle on him, which I think drives a lot of the gnashing of teeth in Habsland… the assumption that because we don’t know about him, he must be a nobody. But he does seem to be a good, NHL-ready center with tons of upside. I’m trying to find Derek Zona’s comments on him that Bruce mentionned… if he is a strong ES performer, he is exactly what the Habs need.
