See Ya Later Igloo, Habs Advance With 5-2 Win
Having eliminated the regular season champions and now the Stanley Cup champions, how far can these Montreal Canadiens go?
The inthinkable is unfolding before our eyes, and the Canadiens will now face either the Bruins or the Flyers (we'll know soon enough).
Backed again by a stellar performance from Jaroslav Halak, with goals by Brian Gionta, Dominic Moore, Mike Camalleri and Travis Moen, the Habs built a 4-0 lead and hung on for read life as the Penguins cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of second period goals
It's hard to type with trembling hands, so more will come in the next few hours...
Props to Hooks Orpik at Pensburgh for his take as the series wraps.
The Pittsburgh Penguins didn't lose this series, the Montreal Canadiens won it. It's not the ending the Igloo deserved, but it's what it got.
I'll second that - great, great building, the Igloo. I'm in fact a bit miffed that I was so late in gaining appreciation for just as it is brought down.

*sigh*
Congrats to you guys. You earned it. No excuses.
Really put a saddening cap on an already bad day. I’m gonna miss watching and enjoying hockey for a few months.
Good luck in the ECF.
And as always, Go Pens.
Glorious
Not into watching hockey much after your team is out, are you?

Haha, I would, but I am not watching the ECF unless the Bruins win this series and are pummeling the Habs.

I am very, very happy right now. I live in Germany and I´ve missed only two or three of the last 180-190 games. It´s not always easy when the games are at 1,1.30,2, or 4 am but I´ve never regret it and this is just an unbelievable reward. This team is for real and I am so glad we didn´t trade Halak. I am already in love with PK and Cammalleri has been absolutely amazing.
There are also so many unsung heroes. Moore, Gorges, Gill, Moen and who still thinks Lapierre is useless? I´ve got a lot of things to do in the next couple of days but the Habs come first. I fucking love this team.
Go Habs go!
This simply incredible....
After all us as fans complained about Martin/Gainey this and that we have made it out of the 2nd round….17 freakin years…..Now lets hope they can win 2 more rounds….Ole..
The hardest part of Gainey’s moves in the offseason were not only seeing Koivu and Kovalev go, but it was also the amount of change.
Other than getting players with championship experience, he mostly sought players who were most interested in playing for the Canadiens. We’re seeing that commitment pay off.

As much as I love this team and as much as I’m enjoying this playoff run, I have to admit a certain amount of sadness that our Captain isn’t a part of it. I know there are people who didn’t like Koivu or who felt he didn’t bring any success to this team, but he dealt with a lot to wear the bleu blanc et rouge and played some good hockey in Mtl despite injuries and cancer, and I wish he could have played a role in the success this team is having. I guess that’s the way it is, though. Hopefully this team didn’t lose him for nothing.

You aren’t the only one who’s thought of Saku lately. I find it unfortunate for him that they first season he’s gone is the first season the Habs advance to the final four.
I hope he shows up for a game at the Bell, and gets a big screen moment and a big ass cheer from the crowd.
He’s the guy, after all, who the put the soul in that building back in ’02.
While I remember the 1993 cup win vaguely, I was only 10 years old when it happened. And during my teenage years, I stopped following hockey and other sports closely. “Sports are stupid,” I said. When I finished growing up, I fell back in love with my Habs, and Saku Koivu was the only captain I really remember. That might sound lame, or stupidly sentimental, but to me, Saku Koivu will always be a Canadien. Even if he isn’t on the ice right now, he played a big role in this team finding it’s heart through the turbulence since 1994. He’ll always have my respect and admiration. His number may never join the greats above the ice in Montreal, but it will take a great player to live up to the standard number 11 set. If the Habs hoist the Cup this year, I only hope he’s there to raise a glass in their honour, and that it’s returned in kind. He has earned that much.,

Habs win
I hate to say it; I predicted a 4-2 habs win………,but I am so happy for this team, and maybe the pengie naysayers, including Crosby, will finally give Montreal credit!!!! Did you see the post game interview with him? I admired him most of his career, inclduing his game winner in the Olympics for gold…..but now he has turned to game whiner; and ON AIR claimed that Montreal`s luck will eventually run out- his words were they cannot continue to be outshot and outchanced and win……….Cindy, you are at the bottom of my barrel now..
Habs were great; and again; heart, not just size and talent, + playing as a team, wins cups………but I will not let that rain on my parade today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go habs, congrats, and keep it up!!!!!
Are you kidding me? That wasn’t at all what he was saying. He said that he never saw a team win while their strategy invloved getting outshot and outchanced. Never said that their luck will run out or that they can’t win. You would think that your gold-medal hero would get more support from his own countrymen. Maybe you should watch it again.
Anyway, it was a fun series to watch. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way.

Never said that their luck will run out or that they can’t win.
In separate interviews clips, that was alluded to.
If he said it or not, it’s true. That style of play might get you to the Cup Finals but it’s going to be tough to play that way against Chicago or San Jose. Regardless, I wish you guys like because I respect the Habs tradition and I don’t want to see Philly or Boston win.

Like I said before...
…every time I count this team out, they surprise the hell out of me. I’m trying not to let myself get carried away here, but these guys are making it hard. This has been some of the most exciting hockey I’ve ever watched, some of the highest highs and lowest lows, and I don’t want it to end. Go Habs go!
Les Canadiens...
…sont la! I hope they play the Bruins, but it’s not hard to hate the Flyers either.
Flyers are really banged up
Think you would want them.

We don’t have decades and decades of hate for the Flyers. While losing to the Flyers might be easier to swallow, beating them wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying. Bring on the Bruins!

I don’t know. We’ve been hating the Flyers for 35+ years. That’s enough.
I dislike the Bruins less, so I’d rather see them beat Philly.

Thanks for taking Pittsburgh out, boys. Hopefully the Flyers will be seeing you next week.
7vs8 for the ECF? How sweet is that?
Go Habs Go!
I admire the Habs.
They got my respect.
But doesn’t mean I can’t hate them after this series though, and doesn’t make me root for them next round.
I actually hope you guys end up like the Canes of last year and get swept :/
Haha sorry I couldn’t resist to say that.
But, ah, congratulations on a deserved win and a great series.
Robert, you do a great job on this blog.
Good luck next round.
Go Habs!
From a Canucks fan.
The Habs are showing what Ive been saying all along:
In the regular season, skill and talent wins you games.
In the playoffs, heart, sacrifice, and teamwork wins you series, even against the best of teams.

Bill Gerin post-game comments.
" The CH played some amazing hockey in this series, their defensive play was incredible; their team play was about as good as I’ve seen ".
Bill Gerin
Cammalleri was wowed when the veteran’s quote was brought to his attention. As Cammy had said in the previous series " its never about a guy or a player; its about how the team plays as a group ", its no wonder he was flatered by such a comment since the significance of it meant alot to him.
I think we have a very intelligent and capable team that will continue adapting well under the wide variety of situations brought forth during playoffs….. being versatile is probably our no.1 strenth…. no wonder figuring us out as been a tough job for our adversaries thus far.. while pundits are still trying to make some sens of it all for themselves after the fact…. I love my team and Gerin is as classy as he is perspicacious.
From a Flyers fan
Congratulations on beating the Pittsburgh Penguins and advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals! Hopefully the Flyers will be seeing you guys there, but if not, then best of luck against the Bruins!
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
Go Habs
Great job Canadiens I think we are going to the finals. Hat’s off to the Pens fans they stuck around and cheered their team even after they lost. And Canadiens fans don’t boo the anthem of The USA it’s classless.
Dolphins, Panthers, Marlins, Heat, and Canadiens!!
Youpi Habs!!
Woot woot. No one better to knock off those clowns than the Habs!!! Exciting series and exciting playoff run…can wait to keep watching the rest. That’s what playoff hockey should be about, not some team that kept getting #1 pick after #1 winning the Cup. Habs earned this one.
"Where do you go from here, Dion?" "I go to Toronto."
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.
Gagner, on peut gagner, a-llez Montreal!!!
HOLY CR*P*LA – everytime I think I’m humming the HNIC tune for the last time this season … :0) As a hardcore HABSfan I can’t get enough of these playoffs, however I’m really just thrilled to have the chance to play (um, or watch) 4 more games!!! Much respect to the Pens, of course – 7 games is hardly an"easily won series". I’d like to think that we’re better prepared for what’s coming thanks to the workout Pittsburgh gave us. At no time during the last 7 games did I feel cocky or even comfortable; I was on the edge of my seat, drenched in sweat. It was a fantastic series with great hockey being played on both sides. We just brought it last night.
