Bring On The Ruskies!

Worsley-soviets__2__medium
Anybody remember the Gumper shutting down the Soviet Union way back when?

This is not a photoshop. This is quite a unique photo. If you are having trouble jogging your mind and don't recall when this happened, I'd love to hear what you think. Weigh in with your guesses - word to T.C. and Francis B, no spoilers please.

I'm not sure if we will pull it off against the dreaded Ruskies or not, but this promises to be one buttkicking game.

As per your wish Robert, my lips are sealed. By the way, do I still get to pick a topic for a future post ??

Anytime my friend – just do not squish me up to a deadline or anniversary date, as I can never guess what’s coming my way anymore.

Now I’m curious, and worried!

I ain't calling the Kostitsyns....

Poor Sergei…tough knock against the Swiss, but solid tourney overall.

Oh yeah, lips sealed Robert!

Gumper

I seem to recall Gump playing goal for the Jr. Canadiens versus the Soviets but do not recall the year. He was a standout in that game.

You are correct, sir. The game was on December 12, 1964. Gump was a member of the Junior Canadiens that night, as they played the touring Russian National team. Worsley was on a conditioning stint that also saw him play a game with the AHL Quebec Aces. The Juniors lineup for the Russian game was bolstered by the addition of Doug Harvey, also a member of the Aces at the time. the final score was 3-2 for the Soviet team. Note the articles I have added above.

All I can think of is how angry the fans would be at that breakdown in defensive coverage. But they’d still blame Gump for not stopping the puck if it went in!

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Great photo

Quite a unique photo for sure! It boggled my mind when I first saw it. Perfect for a trivia type post and a oppurtune day to bring it up Robert! Cheers!

Great trivia pic

With no other Canadian players completely in the shot, it can really throw people off track.

Nice find, Robert

Credit Francis as the owner of the colour pic.

Hey, I guess no one Googled the translation yet.

Translation

Shit, no! Here comes the Communists are ready to destroy our gold medal plans. Quick, someone kidnap Ovechkin and his belongings in the trunk of a car within 24 hours. Nobody got the phone number Kostitsyn brother?

Ah I’d never type anything like that in Russian!
