Alex Kovalev Signs With Rival Senators

Kovalev_pope_medium

According to TSN, the Ottawa Senators have signed forward Alex Kovalev to a two year deal worth $10M. TSN says in part:

A day after some fans held a rally to keep Alex Kovalev in Montreal, the forward's tumultuous tenure in La Belle Province has come to an end as the enigmatic sniper has signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Ottawa Senators.

One of the most skilled players in the league, the Togliatti, Russia native is also one of the most unpredictable. He can look spectacular one night, controlling the play, while completely disappearing for long stretches at a time.

The Kovalev signing comes at a time where the Senators are struggling to move forward Dany Heatly, who requested a trade last week, and twice wouldn't lift his no-movement clause to go to the Edmonton Oilers.

In 1151 career games, Kovalev has 394 and 547 asssists and twice played in the NHL All-Star game, being named the game's MVP this past year in Montreal.

So Kovy's in Ottawa, Komi's in the big smoke, Steve Begin is in Boston next up, expect Koivu to join buddy Craig Rivet in Buffalo and take Alex Tanguay with him.

Northeastern Division games will not be dull this season!

Now as for Kovalev patrolling the right flank alongside Jason Spezza, it should be interesting. Will Spezza get the puck much? Will Kovalev gel with the elusive non checker, and pot 35 to 40 goals? Will Kovalev find his way into coach Cory Clouston's doghouse faster than Sens fans can say "we miss Heatley?"

With this development, it looks as though Ottawa could just dump Heatley to any taker. They better hope for one. By adding Kovalev, Ottawa's cap space is now a mere $2K - according to NHL Numbers - enough to sign a part time waterboy!

He got a raise?

I can understand teams taking a chance on Alex…but giving him a raise is surprising! You love and hate Alex, but I’ll miss him, his shot was wicked…hopefully we won’t see much of that against Halak or Price!

Talk about cap trouble, Ottawa, yikes! We can hardly compare our cap issues, how are the Sens supposed to move Heatly for ANY value now! I guess they resigned themselves to simply ditching him…or even worse playing him!

I doubt if Heatley and Kovalev will share an ice surface. Ottawa can’t really go forward with that lineup. The cheapest minor league call up for 1 NHL game puts them over.

Kovalev and Spezza

Could be interesting to see how two guys who like to have control of the offensive situation (a polite way of saying puck hog) will gel on a line together.

in response to blockersave re: Price vs Kovalev. If you recall the all-star game, Price called Kovalev’s shot from the bench.

Don't forget

Michael Ryder last year…

The question now is was it the coach (Carbo) or was it a higher power?

Two years ago we lost in the playoffs because we were “unlucky”. Last year we lost because of Carbo and the injury to Markov. Now we have had a blood letting which was followed up by Gainey’s drunken soldier moves of July 1st. Is there really a phoenix rising in Montreal, or is Armageddon just around the corner? Robert L knows me quite well and realizes that I am still here supporting our team but you sometimes have to wonder if the circus hasn’t come to town a little early this year. I tried to state some thoughts on the subject on HIO a few days ago but was beaten into the ground by the newly formed Gomez zealots. (maybe the Canadien Coyotes will move to Salem one day:-). Thank goodness for rusty nails – they sure beat a numbered Hab jersey right now:-)

Maybe you’re feeling like I am, stuck sitting on a fence without much use for the barbed wire. I’ll try keeping an open mind, but I gather I can only start liking this team once it begins winning and doing the CH proud. They gotta be worthy!
