The Habs cap space is really lower once you factor in their bonus cushion as well as the point that they have to leave some room for injuries and late season trades. Gainey has blown the bundle on his new players so what you see is what you get for the next few years.

The only Habs players with bonuses that I know of would be SK74 and Price. Price’s games played bonus has been factored into the total, but SK’s points bonus was not, from what I could tell. There would also be bonuses for Maxwell, Weber and Carle should they play full NHL seasons. As per the current CBA, only players on entry level contracts and veterans 35 and over signing one year contracts are eligible for bonuses.

Robert – I have the 16 signed players at 47,962,000 which includes the full bonus packs for SK74 and Price. Based on last year’s cap hits, Dags, Lats, Pkeks, MaxPac, Weber and a combined Chipchura/Stewart salary would come in at 5.5M. That obviously would have to be higher with some anticipated raises. I don’t see a hell of a lot of extra cap space floating around, especially if you are putting some aside for injuries and late season trades. BYW, next year isn’t any better.

I used these numbers Steve. I guess they are the same.

The Habs are cooked for two years, until 2011-12, when only $22M is signed. Start over agin then?

Leafs

All that cap room they had and now they are inthe middle of the pack after signing/trading for players that had a combined 3 goals and 400+ minutes in penalties (stats are just a guesstimate)….

Atta boy Brian Burke…Meanwhile their “goalie of the future” was used/treated poorly by the organization last year and is an RFA…

I know there are cap issues

But isn’t it good to be in the middle of the pack?

So couldn’t we cut Tomas loose and re-sign Saku at this point? Just offer thomas the minimum and if he takes it, we can re-sign Saku, if he doesn’t, we can re-sign Saku!

Really, with all the complaining (and rightly so, to a point) about the cap space…we are only in the middle of the NHL! WOW!

Thanks for pulling that out of the woodwork Robert. I know there are still some players to sign, but it’s nice to see where we stand in comparison.

The middle is somewhat deceptive. It’s the number of players signed related to available cash that’s the concern. That 10.4M has to be spead over four RFA’s, an additional 7th D and maybe two more roster players at least. That number also does not include the salaries of Pacioretty and Weber. If the Canadiens wished to resign either Koivu or Kovalev, they would need to clear close to 4M to make room.

Think the Habs should go after one of the Chicago free agents? That Versteeg kid is good, I hear.

Cap room vs Budget

This is my first time posting here, but I have been a fan of the blog for a while, so please be gentle.

Thanks so much for posting this info.

One thing I would note, while this chart notes the amount of space/$$$ available under the league salary cap, not all teams can (or choose) to afford to spend to the cap. For example, down here in Carolina, the Hurricanes operate under their own self-imposed budget/cap, so while they have over $8 million in cap space, they actually only have around $3 maybe $4 million left over in their self-imposed budget. And that with Ruutu still waiting to be signed as a RFA. I’m sure the same is true of other “small market” teams such as Atlanta, Nashville, Phoenix, Columbus, etc.

Just something to consider when anticipating moves.

Of course you probably already know that.

Thanks UT, I considered adding such a disclaimer about individual team cap spaces, but was unsure what the floor was this year in relation to last. I believe it is still in the $40M range.

I must admit, I used to be dubious about the hockey market in Raleigh. Not so much anymore. I’m starting to see the relation between speed on a track and speed on ice being an allure. Still, the "Canes ought to have been called the Carolina or Raleigh Racers. The logo would be da bomb!
