Feels like a revolving door. Let’s try something for a couple of seasons then wipe the slate clean and start over.

Sounds like the policy of about 25 other GM’s as well.

I think by the looks of it Gainey has done a decent job building (or should I say rebuilding) a competitive franchise. A winner? Maybe not. But I look at that inherited roster from 2003 and remember cheering for and trying to defend those players.
Trades I think based on skill level most of the players brought in via trade were better than those shipped out.
FAs Based on years of hoping for better and finally settling (I remember the excitement on HIO over “Hammer and Smoke”) This years crop looks decent – and not too many of those that left have went on to truly greater things (although the jury is out on this year’s crop)
drafts A definite improvement under Gainey. Plus 0 of 20 traded picks playing in the NHL looks impressive (again – the jury is out on the recent 1st and 2nd rounders traded).

Maybe the 5 year plan wasn’t perfect. But in times when only 1 of 30 teams can win the cup and the salary cap limits the ability to make mistakes, Gainey has at least given most fans hope that the team will compete for the cup (not the case from the late 90’s to 2003)

ignore the bold in the previous post.

By the way – thanks for all the great research and continued great reads, Robert.

YW, Wutabi, and thanks for the kinds words.

What needs to be underline when considering Gainey’s track record, is that the Canadiens were playoff onlookers when he arrived, and have now been in the post season four of the last five seasons.

It’s an improvement for starters, but still not enough for many.

I think there’s no question that the Habs have been better since Gainey took over. But they’re not amazingly better, and I believe, IMHO, that part of the reason is that Gainey did not blow the team up back in ‘03 like he did this season. Other than Price, which was luck getting the 5th overall, we’ve never had a top 5 pick. The young teams coming up, ie Pens, Hawks., Caps.etc, have all had the luxury of top 5 pics in several drafts…
That being said, I’m still a big believer in Gainey, and I’m looking forward to next year !
(and yes the Gomez deal really pissed me off..but now it’s starting to look possibly good)

Imagine if the Penguins have drafted Toews instead of Staal! Whoa!

What about Gainey's son Steve added to Bulldogs roster?

I didn’t get too deep into the Bulldogs. There were lots of other minor moves that just couldn’t be tracked properly. I looked Steve Gainey up at one time, and couldn’t get certain particulars.

Anyone having a date when he signed, I’ll add him in.
